Professor Chris Karapetis
Professor Chris Karapetis is the Head of the Department of Medical Oncology at the Flinders Medical Centre and the Network Director for Cancer Services in the Southern Area Local Health Network of Adelaide. He is also the Director of Clinical Research in Medical Oncology at the Flinders Medical Centre and the Flinders Centre for Innovation in Cancer. He is the immediate past chair of the Medical Oncology Group of Australia. He served as a COSA Board member between 2013 and 2016.
Professor Karapetis has been the principal investigator on over 170 clinical trials. His interest in clinical research developed following a research fellowship at Guy’s Hospital in London. He has established research interests in the areas of gastro-intestinal malignancy, lung cancer, molecular targeted therapies, predictive biomarkers and epidemiology. Prof Karapetis a member of the Australasian Gastrointestinal Trials Group and is the current deputy chair of the Lower GI Cancer Working Group. He has been an active collaborator with the AGITG on many clinical trials and he was the principal investigator for the CO.17 clinical trial. Prof Karapetis led the K-ras biomarker research from CO.17, with findings that impacted on global clinical practice, supporting a biomarker driven approach to EGFR antibody therapy in bowel cancer. He is a former chair of the Gastrointestinal Group of the Clinical Oncology Society of Australia (COSA). He has served on NHMRC Grant Review Panels through 2015 to 2017 and has acted as a reviewer for several high impact factor medical journals. Prof Karapetis has published over 150 scientific papers in peer-reviewed scientific journals.
